39## Local File Controls
41Before `convert_local()`:
431. Resolve the candidate path and the approved root.
442. Confirm the resolved candidate remains under that root.
453. Reject symlinks when their semantics are not explicitly required.
464. Require a regular file; reject devices, FIFOs, sockets, and directories.
475. Enforce an extension/MIME allowlist.
486. Apply a maximum byte size before opening.
497. Open with the least-privileged process account.
508. Keep sensitive directories outside the process's readable namespace.
52Do not build a path by concatenating an untrusted filename with a directory string.
54The bundled batch and literature scripts use `convert_local()` and skip symlink inputs by default. Their type/size checks are input controls, not network enforcement: detected formats, nested archive members, or reviewed plugins can invoke external processing. For a strict offline run, deny network access at the process/container boundary.

56## HTTP(S) and SSRF Controls
58Do not pass a user-controlled URL directly to `convert()` or `convert_uri()`.
60An application-controlled downloader should enforce all of the following:
62- Permit only required schemes, preferably HTTPS.
63- Reject embedded usernames/passwords and malformed authorities.
64- Canonicalize internationalized hostnames.
65- Resolve DNS and reject every loopback, private, link-local, multicast, reserved, unspecified, and metadata-service address in IPv4 and IPv6.
66- Revalidate the destination on every redirect.
67- Defend against DNS rebinding; validation before connection alone is insufficient.
68- Disable ambient proxy/environment behavior unless it is an explicit part of policy.
69- Use connect and read timeouts.
70- Limit redirect count.
71- Enforce `Content-Length` when present and a streaming byte limit regardless of the header.
72- Limit decompressed size.
73- Allowlist response MIME types.
74- Verify TLS normally; never disable certificate verification.
75- Avoid forwarding credentials across origins.
76- Pass the validated `requests.Response` to `convert_response()`.
78MarkItDown's own HTTP path calls a Requests session and buffers the complete response before parsing. It does not impose these application-level controls.

HTTP(S) and SSRF Controls

Do not pass a user-controlled URL directly to convert() or convert_uri().

  • Reject embedded usernames/passwords and malformed authorities.
  • Canonicalize internationalized hostnames.
  • Resolve DNS and reject every loopback, private, link-local, multicast, reserved, unspecified, and metadata-service address in IPv4 and IPv6.

80## `file:` and `data:` URIs
82`file:` URIs can read local files the process user can read. Version 0.1.8 rejects UNC and Windows device paths in this URI path. MarkItDown permits an empty authority or `localhost`; this is not a path allowlist.
84`data:` URIs can contain arbitrarily large base64 payloads. Base64 decoding allocates another buffer (normally smaller than the encoded text), and conversion can create additional copies.
86Prefer `convert_local()` or a bounded `convert_stream()` path instead of accepting arbitrary URI strings.

88## Streams and Memory
90- `convert_stream()` copies a non-seekable stream completely into memory.
91- `convert_response()` buffers the complete HTTP response.
92- ZIP, large tables, base64 images, and generated Markdown can substantially expand data.
93- `--keep-data-uris` preserves full embedded payloads and can expose hidden/sensitive data.

97## Archives
99MarkItDown's ZIP converter iterates members and applies nested conversion. Before accepting an untrusted archive, enforce:
101- Maximum compressed bytes
102- Maximum total uncompressed bytes
103- Maximum member count
104- Maximum single-member bytes
105- Maximum nested archive depth
106- Compression-ratio threshold
107- File-type allowlist
108- Conversion timeout
110MarkItDown does not turn an archive into a safe bundle merely because it processes members in memory.

123- 0.1.3 required safe ExifTool usage at version 12.24 or later.
124- 0.1.4 updated Mammoth and `pdfminer.six` for published vulnerabilities.
125- 0.1.6 clarified the project's I/O security posture; 0.1.8 tightened `file:` URI paths.
127For production:
129- Lock transitive dependencies and retain hashes.
130- Scan the environment and container image.
131- Rebuild when parser security advisories are published.
132- Test representative documents after upgrades.

134## Plugins
136Plugins are arbitrary Python code loaded through package entry points. They run in the same process and can access its files, network, environment, and credentials.
138- Keep `enable_plugins=False` by default.
139- Pin and review every plugin.
140- Inspect install/build hooks and transitive dependencies.
141- Run risky plugins in a sandbox with synthetic files.
142- Do not install by hashtag or name similarity alone.
144The official `markitdown-ocr` plugin still introduces external LLM calls and expands parser dependencies.

162- Use only the named credential required by the selected service.
163- Prefer workload identity or managed identity for Azure.
164- Never enumerate, copy, print, or forward the process environment.
165- Never place a key in a command-line argument, source file, Markdown output, manifest, or log.
166- Keep provider base URLs fixed to a reviewed endpoint; do not combine a credential with a user-controlled endpoint.
167- Scope keys to the minimum service/project and rotate them.

173Before cloud, audio, or LLM processing:
175- Confirm consent and data-processing agreements.
176- Check PHI/PII, genomic-identifiability, unpublished results, export controls, and sponsor restrictions.

196## Prompt Injection in Converted Content
198Documents can contain text such as "ignore previous instructions," links to malicious resources, or commands disguised as analysis steps. Conversion preserves that content.
200When Markdown is used with an agent or RAG system:
2021. Label it as untrusted source material.
2032. Separate it from system/developer instructions.
2043. Do not grant tools based on instructions found in the document.
2054. Require independent authorization for file, shell, network, or credential actions.
2065. Preserve source/page provenance for claims.
2076. Sanitize active HTML and dangerous links before rendering.
